Domestic Wastewater Treatment: Reliable Solutions for Sustainable Water Management

At Allbits Plumbing Supplies, we provide trusted advice and products for domestic wastewater treatment to help ensure compliance with Environmental Agency guidelines and protect both public health and the environment. Whether you’re managing a residential property or planning a new installation, our experts are here to help you navigate the General Binding Rules and choose the right treatment system for your needs.

Understanding General Binding Rules for Wastewater Treatment

Effective wastewater treatment is essential to comply with Environmental Agency regulations. According to the General Binding Rules, discharges from septic tanks directly to surface water such as rivers or streams are prohibited. Instead, you must use a small sewage treatment plant, also known as a package treatment plant, which uses mechanical processes to ensure treated wastewater is clean enough to enter surface water.

Replacing or Upgrading Septic Tanks

If your property has a septic tank that discharges directly to a surface water, you will need to replace or upgrade your system to a suitable sewage treatment plant. This requirement has been mandatory since 1 January 2020.

  • Selling a Property: Replacement or upgrade responsibility should be addressed during the sale process for properties with outdated septic tanks.
  • Pollution Risks: If the Environment Agency finds evidence of pollution caused by your septic tank, you may need to replace or upgrade the system within one year, depending on specific circumstances.

Choosing the Right Sewage Treatment Method

Selecting an appropriate system for your site is vital to ensure long-term effectiveness, legal compliance, and environmental protection:

  • Sewage Treatment Plant: Ideal for properties with access to surface water like rivers or streams, a package treatment plant ensures wastewater meets discharge standards.
  • Septic Tank Arrangement: If no main sewer is available, a septic tank system may be suitable if you have sufficient land for drainage runoff.
  • Cesspool: In cases where other options aren’t feasible, a cesspool may be considered.
